Should the NFL Preseason Be Shortened?

Shortening the preseason can be good for some and bad for others. Personally, as a fan of football, I’m a little selfish because I want to see as much live football as I possibly can. I watch preseason games, college games, hell; I even got up Saturday morning and watched a bunch of high school games. So basically what I’m trying to say is that I love watching football.

The thing about the NFL preseason is that it has a number of pros and cons. Let’s start with some of the pros.

  • For starters it generates a great deal of money for the sport and it’s great for the fans.
  • It gives young guys a chance to show what they can do and either make the team or move up on the depth charts.
  • It gives coaches in insight into how certain players will perform in game situation so they can make sure that they are putting the right players on the field when the regular season starts.
  • Preseason games give the starters a chance to get into game shape and knock off the cobwebs.

These are some key points; and I’m sure there are many more that GM’s, coaches and players take into consideration during the preseason games. Having stated that, there is one major con that comes along with playing preseason games.

  • Risk of injury

I don’t think that anyone will debate the fact that football is a dangerous sport. The chances of getting hurt are much more like than in some other sports, but at the end of the day no one wants to see a NFL player go down in a game that doesn’t matter.

Should Preseason Be Shortened?

This is the million dollar question. I just stated a number of pros supporting the preseason but do they outweigh the risk of injury? I personally think that there should only be 2 preseason games. I understand that it would be harder to get a full evaluation on bubble guys but you’ll reduce the chances of players getting hurt by 50%.

That’s just my opinion but as always, I DON’T CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT, I JUST LIKE TALKING ABOUT IT.
