I Worked Out In The Middle Of The Day and Loved It

What is the best time of day to exercise? Is it in the morning before you go to work or in the evening when you leave work? Most people prefer one or the other but seldom do I hear or see people working out in the middle of the day.

Now I know that’s not possible for most people because they’re working in the middle of the day but let me tell you, I recently did it and I felt better than I have ever felt in my life.

What Did I Do?

I’m glad you asked. I really didn’t do anything different than I normally would. It was my day to do shoulders and biceps and little cardio, so that’s what I did. I didn’t change anything about the workout or go against the grain, but for some reason it gave me a different feeling. I felt more alive, I had more energy and I seemed to have taken some type of super drug.

Now like most people that frequent the gym or workout on a regular basis, I’m accustomed to getting that feeling that comes from the release of endorphins. I also know what it feels like to miss a couple weeks and try to get back into the swing of things, but that’s another topic. What I’m trying to say is that this was new and kind of weird.

What Was That?

So right now I’m trying to figure out what in the world that was. If I could I would workout in the middle of the day more often, but like many other people, I have to work and my schedule doesn’t usually allow it. But I promise you this, when I am able to exercise in the middle of the day, I’m going to take advantage of it.

I will be doing some research on this and as soon as I find out what this was, I’ll make sure and blog about it.

If you know what causes…I don’t know, extra endorphins to release (that’s what I’m going to say it was) from working out during the middle of the day, please leave me a comment.

What Time Should You Workout?

What Time Should You Workout?

What’s the best time of day to exercise? The answer to this question is totally up to the individual. In most cases, a person’s job affects when they hit the gym.

Personally, I like working out in the evening. After a long hard day at work, I use exercise to help with my winding down process. After a good workout and shower, it’s usually time for dinner and then it’s time to relax a watch a little television.

My wife on the other hand likes to get her workouts done as early as possible. It helps her wake up and it gets her day started in the right direction. She tried working out with me in the evening but it just wasn’t a good fit for her. She enjoys cooking dinner but after a long workday and a tough work, the last thing she wants to do is cook dinner. Which has caused us to have to suffer through my cooking or order out, which is another story.

So there really isn’t a perfect time to exercise, the goal is just to get it done. Find out what works for you and your schedule and find a way to make it work. There are some people that use the excuse that they just don’t have time, but we all know how to make time for what we really want.

Take Your Diet Day By Day

Take Your Diet Day By Day

Have you ever completed a week of clean eating and at the end of that week you feel like you’ve climbed to the top of Mount Rushmore? Eating clean can be difficult, especially if you don’t have a good game plan.

The mistake I used to make was waiting till Friday before I assessed my eating results. I noticed a trend that I just couldn’t break. I would usually have a pretty good start to the week and then I would fall off track around Wednesday or Thursday. There were a couple of times when I messed up as early as Tuesday.

Failing week after week was so frustrating because I just couldn’t seem to stick to a routine. My intentions were good but my execution was all off.

Once I started assessing my meals on a daily basis, I was finally able to have some success. The goal I set for myself was very simple. I would usually have the same thing for breakfast every morning.

  • Oatmeal with fruit
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • Coffee

I give myself a little more freedom during lunch. Just as long as I can exercise good portion control, I try to keep lunch pretty open.

As for dinner, this is where I run into problems. Before I started planning out my dinners the night before, I used to wing it; simply put, I’d figure it out when dinner time arrived. I would start the day with good intentions, but 2-3 times per week I’d end up getting fast food or frozen pizza.

My goal for dinner time is to keep portion size low and carbs to a minimum, but this is easier said than done. If I’m tired after work or I have to go somewhere after work that forces me to come home late, my plans to cook something healthy are over.

Day by Day

Since my problem has never been breakfast or lunch, I decided to start planning out my dinners the night before. I have a few go-to dishes which included boneless chicken breasts, flank steak, asparagus, sweet potatoes and lettuce, so I try to keep my fridge stocked with these items at all times. Every now and then I may deviate from these choices but it’s usually a conscious effort the night before.

Assessing my progress day by day has allowed me to have better weekly assessments. No longer do I feel like I’ve failed when Friday comes or that I’m starting over from scratch when Monday rolls back around. I end each week feeling like I’ve climbed to the tip of Mount Rushmore.

Online Health and Fitness Training, Is It Right For You?

Online Health and Fitness Training, Is It Right For You?

Joining the gym and getting a personal trainer sounded like a great idea at the beginning of the year but for some people they are realizing that the traditional gym setting isn’t for them.

It can be really discouraging if you’ve been away from the gym for a while and you get sandwiched between two bodybuilders or two marathon runners on the treadmill.

Online Health and Fitness

People that have been away from the gym for a while need to have a place where they can feel comfortable getting back into the swing of things. I’m a big proponent of online training. That’s right, you can get everything you need by logging on to the web, especially if you’re just getting back into it.

Gyms are structured with the regulars in mind. Men have large egos and we really don’t want to be seen bench pressing if we aren’t even half as strong as the other guys around us. Most guys will say that it doesn’t matter but deep down it does.

Ladies are a little more open about it. They don’t mind telling anyone that they don’t want to go to certain gyms for whatever the reason may be.

People need more options to get in shape and the traditional gym setting may not be the best fit for many people. More trainers are using the internet to reach their clients. The great thing about cyber training is that both parties can be in different locations. All they need is internet access and the sessions can begin.

Let’s Get Started

If you’re interested in trying out cyber training, there are many options available. You won’t have to worry about competing with other gym rats are trying to find a gym that suites your needs. The internet has made it possible for us to live our lives in unconventional ways.

The Cheat Day From Hell

The Cheat Day From Hell

I’m sure it’s happened to all health conscious Pancakespeople, a cheat meal or cheat day that went a little too far. I fell victim to the cheat day because of convenience. I know that’s not a real excuse but hey, it’s better than no excuse at all, right?

What Went Wrong?

The day started off wrong…as far as eating healthy goes, otherwise it would have been considered great.

Just keep reading you’ll see what I mean

My wife decided to treat the family by cooking breakfast. She was being a sweetheart and decided to make her fluffy pancakes.

Now we all know that pancakes; ones made the old-fashion way, aren’t the healthiest thing in the world, especially when you have some Aunt Jemima syrup on the side, but they sure are good. Combine that with cheese eggs and turkey bacon and I can’t think of anything better.

I tried to be strong and figured just because it was my favorite breakfast that I didn’t have to totally mess up. My wife knows I usually allocate a cheat day for myself so she was just giving me a treat. I stuffed my face as fast as I could and when I thought I was done, I heard those magic words, “there’s more”.

I couldn’t help myself, I had a second FULL plate. Along with the food, she poured me a glass of orange juice and milk. Yep, I drank them both.

The Rest of the Day

I knew I had really messed up so I decided to tone down the rest of the cheat day, especially since I had just eaten enough for a small elephant. Well the day took a turn for the worst. I promised to take my son shopping because his Christmas money was burning his pockets. All those discussions about saving money only lasted about 2 weeks, but that’s another subject.

We left the house before lunch time and I didn’t get a snack before we left because of how much I had for dinner. Before we made our first stop, my wife and son were both complaining that they were hungry. Like most families out riding around, they had the bright idea to just make a stop at a local fast food restaurant. I figured that would be fine because I could just order a grilled chicken sandwich.

The idea was good but the execution was bad. I order a grilled chicken sandwich at the drive-thru like I planned but when I opened it up I discovered the most beautiful fried chicken sandwich I had ever seen.

Now keep in mind that I’m starving at this point. I didn’t order any fries so I figured if I just eat the sandwich that it wouldn’t be too bad, besides, it’s my cheat day.

I gobbled the sandwich up and then once again my beautiful wife sabotaged treated me again. She said, “I don’t want these fries, do you want them or should I just throw them away”?

Now you know good and well that I’m not going to just throw food in the trash. So being the resourceful person that I am, I ate the fries.

As soon as I was done, I felt like crap. I said to myself that there is no way I can eat anything unhealthy for the rest of the day. I told my wife that I was going to have a salad and water. She looks and me and says, “You forgot, didn’t you? We have a dinner party tonight”.

Capping Off a Terrible Day

I had no idea what was going to be served at this dinner party, all I know is that the last time we went to this couples house they had food and booze for days.

When we arrived, it looked like they were preparing for the last supper. There was so much food I didn’t know what to do with myself. So what do you think I did? Yep, I decided to declare this day as the world’s worst cheat day.

Yes this was my cheat day, but I went a little overboard. The fact of the matter is that sometimes things don’t go the way we plan. Whenever you have a day that you know you completely messed up your diet, the best thing to do is start planning for the next day. There is no sense in beating yourself up over spilled milk. Learn from the experience and have a game plan for the next time
you’re going to be out and about.

Yes, I should have exercised willpower during breakfast. No, there wasn’t any reason for me to have 2 extra-large servings. Yes, I should have taken the fried chicken sandwich back and not eaten the fries. As far as the dinner party I should have…well I had a blast there.

Sometimes you have to let your hair down and have a little fun. Don’t stress yourself out too much when it comes to food. A cheat meal from time to time isn’t the worst thing in the world. It actually keeps me sane. The key is to plan out your meals, including cheat days. Improper planning leaves room for mistakes that could have otherwise been prevented.
