7 Day without Coffee, Here’s How it Affected Me

I started drinking coffee probably 15 years ago and I immediately fell in love with it. I can honestly say that I haven’t gone more than 2 consecutive days without coffee in those 15 years. I have a morning routine that I like to stick to and it always includes coffee.

A normal morning includes a cup of java from my heavily used Keurig. I try to stick to only one cup a day but there are times when I’ll indulge in a second cup. When I’m not cranking up the Keurig, I like to go to Starbucks and a couple of other coffee shops in Atlanta. A couple of them are so familiar with my wife and I they start fixing our coffees as soon as we walk in.

Why The 7 Day Challenge?

I was inspired by my wife who recently decided to give up meat for a certain period of time. I asked her why and she said it was for various reasons, maybe she won’t mind if I share why at a later date. After discussing her reasons for giving up something she loved for a certain period of time, I told her I would give up something for 7 days.

The first challenge I tried was something I like but not necessarily love, beer. I’ll have a brew a couple times a week. When my week of no beer was over I felt a sense of accomplishment but there was no real change in how I felt about beer, I guess because it’s not something I feel like I have to have anyway.

Now coffee is a totally different ball game. As much as I hate to admit it, I feel like I have to have coffee in the morning. When I don’t get my coffee I’m irritable and I have terrible headaches. So this is going to be a much bigger challenge than the beer for me.

Day 1

I just completed day 1 and it wasn’t too bad. I made it through with the help of some green tea, which was very mediocre compared to coffee in my opinion. I didn’t really have any headaches and I wasn’t too irritable.

I started this challenge on a Sunday so I spent most of the day watching football and napping. Maybe the fact that I used minimal brain power is why I was able to get through the day so easily, but it also could have been the green tea.

I’m not putting too much emphasis on day 1, I’m anxious to see how the rest of the week goes.

Day 2

I just made my tea and it’s just not doing it for me. I tried to make it taste better by adding lemon and honey but it’s just not working.

To make matters worse I have to meet someone today at a Starbucks. This meeting was scheduled before I decided to do this challenge so I guess I’ll just have to have one of their teas, which are pretty good, so I think I’ll be alright.

Once I walked inside of Starbucks the smell of the coffee hit me in the face like a Mike Tyson punch, but I didn’t break. I ordered a tall peach green tea lemonade and it was actually pretty good. It does have a little caffeine in it so it knocked the edge off a little, but what I really wanted was a caramel macchiato.

To make a long story short I made it through the day. I did have some moments of weakness and I thought this might be a stupid idea, but I didn’t break. Besides, it’s just day 2, I’m not even halfway through.

Day 3

I’ve been up and moving around for about 3 hours and surprisingly my head isn’t hurting. I had a pretty good breakfast and all I’ve had to drink is water and orange juice. I do intend on having some green tea because I’ve been told and read that it has many health benefits.

Even though my head isn’t hurting; I still really want some but it isn’t as hard to not drink it this morning. I hope the rest of my day goes as well as my morning has. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed in hopes that I don’t start having urges throughout the day.

Later that day I decided to have some tea but instead of green tea I decided to have some chamomile tea. It’s caffeine free and supposed to have a lot of health benefits too. I thought about trying to go the entire day with no tea but watching other people around me drink coffee and smelling the coffee didn’t help with what I’m trying to do. So this tea is going to have to work.

Day 4

Today I had to get up super early and normally when I have to get up hours before I usually do I’ll have a cup of coffee to go. Well since I’m not having coffee I decided not to have anything, and nope I didn’t have tea either.

The day started off okay but the closer it got to noon the worse my head started hurting. Now I thought I had overcome the “no coffee headache” but obviously I didn’t. The pain in my head was radiating from front to back and then it was just a constant pulsing behind the back of my right ear.

By 1 pm I couldn’t take it anymore. I didn’t have coffee; but I did make a cup of green tea and I added a little honey. It helped a little bit but it didn’t resolve my headache and irritability. If I had to rate my headache on a scale of 1-10 before the tea it was about a 7 or 8, after the tea it went to 4.

I’m over halfway done with this experiment and I can honestly say that not having coffee is affecting my energy, focus and concentration. I’m having a tougher time doing tasks that I normally breeze through.

Day 5

Today has started off pretty good. I’ve been up for a while and I feel pretty good. My head isn’t hurting and I’m not experiencing irritability.

I don’t know if my workouts have anything to do with how I’m feeling but I did go to the gym last night and I pushed myself pretty hard. I usually go to the gym about 3 or 4 times a week anyway, so I’m no stranger to the gym. I guess I need to work out tonight and tomorrow and I’ll see how it helps with my headaches and irritability.

It’s almost noon and my head has started banging and the irritability is back. All I have to say right now is I want coffee. My wife is sitting beside me with a big up of coffee and it smells so good. She offered to take it into a different room but I told her not to, I’m going to punish myself to the fullest, it’s going to make my next cup so worth it.

Day 6

Well today I woke up with a headache but it’s not as bad as it was earlier in the week. I did have green tea this morning but I waited until 11:30 am just to make sure that the reduced headache didn’t get worse.

My desire for coffee isn’t as strong as it was earlier in the week either. I don’t know what’s going on with me but I’m not feeling like I have to have coffee this morning. If I wasn’t participating in this experiment, I’d probably still have a cup because I love the smell and the act of drinking coffee but I’m not feeling like I need it to survive today.

I guess I spoke too soon. Around 2 pm my head started knocking and the irritability began to increase again. Honestly I feel like the only thing that can fix my problem is coffee.

Day 7

Today started off similar to Day 6. It’s about 10 am and I don’t really have a headache or irritability at the moment. I don’t know if this is going to last because during Day 6 all of my “No Coffee” issues started around 2 pm. I’m also going to hold off on tea for now and see how long I can go with nothing at all.

While hanging out with my family my headache slowly started festering up. I knew I was going to have to do something about it because I didn’t want to spoil the day with my family and I didn’t want to take an aspirin; I hate taking pills of any kind.

We made a Starbucks run and I got peach green tea lemonade, but this time I got a grande. Now don’t get me wrong, I would have much rather had a caramel macchiato but it knocked the edge off.

At the end of the day I felt a sense of satisfaction. For many people going 7 days with no coffee my sound like nothing, but for me it was a tall task. I can’t wait until tomorrow; it’s going to be a joyous day.

What Time Should You Workout?

What’s the best time of day to exercise? The answer to this question is totally up to the individual. In most cases, a person’s job affects when they hit the gym.

Personally, I like working out in the evening. After a long hard day at work, I use exercise to help with my winding down process. After a good workout and shower, it’s usually time for dinner and then it’s time to relax a watch a little television.

My wife on the other hand likes to get her workouts done as early as possible. It helps her wake up and it gets her day started in the right direction. She tried working out with me in the evening but it just wasn’t a good fit for her. She enjoys cooking dinner but after a long workday and a tough work, the last thing she wants to do is cook dinner. Which has caused us to have to suffer through my cooking or order out, which is another story.

So there really isn’t a perfect time to exercise, the goal is just to get it done. Find out what works for you and your schedule and find a way to make it work. There are some people that use the excuse that they just don’t have time, but we all know how to make time for what we really want.

Take Your Diet Day By Day

Have you ever completed a week of clean eating and at the end of that week you feel like you’ve climbed to the top of Mount Rushmore? Eating clean can be difficult, especially if you don’t have a good game plan.

The mistake I used to make was waiting till Friday before I assessed my eating results. I noticed a trend that I just couldn’t break. I would usually have a pretty good start to the week and then I would fall off track around Wednesday or Thursday. There were a couple of times when I messed up as early as Tuesday.

Failing week after week was so frustrating because I just couldn’t seem to stick to a routine. My intentions were good but my execution was all off.

Once I started assessing my meals on a daily basis, I was finally able to have some success. The goal I set for myself was very simple. I would usually have the same thing for breakfast every morning.

  • Oatmeal with fruit
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • Coffee

I give myself a little more freedom during lunch. Just as long as I can exercise good portion control, I try to keep lunch pretty open.

As for dinner, this is where I run into problems. Before I started planning out my dinners the night before, I used to wing it; simply put, I’d figure it out when dinner time arrived. I would start the day with good intentions, but 2-3 times per week I’d end up getting fast food or frozen pizza.

My goal for dinner time is to keep portion size low and carbs to a minimum, but this is easier said than done. If I’m tired after work or I have to go somewhere after work that forces me to come home late, my plans to cook something healthy are over.

Day by Day

Since my problem has never been breakfast or lunch, I decided to start planning out my dinners the night before. I have a few go-to dishes which included boneless chicken breasts, flank steak, asparagus, sweet potatoes and lettuce, so I try to keep my fridge stocked with these items at all times. Every now and then I may deviate from these choices but it’s usually a conscious effort the night before.

Assessing my progress day by day has allowed me to have better weekly assessments. No longer do I feel like I’ve failed when Friday comes or that I’m starting over from scratch when Monday rolls back around. I end each week feeling like I’ve climbed to the tip of Mount Rushmore.
